Richmond Plains is an organic and biodynamic Nelson wine making pioneer producing New Zealand’s first Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from certified Organic and Biodynamic grapes. We also produce Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Rose, Syrah and Blanc de Noir – Pinot made as a white wine.
We believe in making great wines by working with nature in our vineyard environment. By using organic and biodynamic methods we can truly express the vineyard’s character or terroir in the wines.
Richmond Plains has been growing and making organic wine since inception in 1991 and its grapes are Certified Organic by AsureQuality and Certified Biodynamic by Demeter New Zealand.
Double Gold at the 2015 New Zealand Organic Wine Awards
“We were very excited to be awarded 2 x Gold Medals at these awards recognizing New Zealand’s top organic and biodynamic wine producers” said owner Lars Jensen.
Richmond Plains was awarded Gold Medals for its 2014 Blue Moon Sauvignon Blanc and Blanc de Noir. This Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s only Biodynamic Certified white wine. The Blanc de Noir is also a very unique wine as it is a white wine made 100% from red Pinot Noir grapes. Lars said “This delicious wine is like drinking champagne without the bubbles”.
Richmond Plains also won silver for its 2014 Chardonnay.

Wine Writers of NZ at Richmond Plains
A Wine Writers of New Zealand group including many of NZ’s top wine writers recently visited our vineyard. Special wines tasted included Richmond Plains Blue Moon Sauvignon Blanc – NZ’s only certified Biodynamic white wine.
“As well as current vintages we tried 2014 Blue Moon barrel samples in the actual vineyard from which it was made. Despite all the juice being identical the differences were amazing between each barrel that ranged from new to older oak.

We would like to introduce our new symbol for Richmond Plains. We took our lone
koru and created a spiral of korus as nothing works on its own in nature and nor do we. This reflects our philosophy of making great wine that’s also good for you and the planet by working with nature.
Well recognised in New Zealand; the Koru is very important to us. The Koru symbolises new beginnings, unfolding life and growth. Just as each season brings new life in the vineyard and new wines to make, the flavours of previous wines are gently developing and unfolding as they sit in the bottle waiting to be enjoyed.
The spiral of the Korus reflect the Certified Biodynamic and Organic nature of our vineyard. Even the stirring of preparations and blending of man with nature to produce something special.
The 7 Korus like days of the week reflect the natural environmental calendar we work with and the dynamic and free flowing form reflects natural elements we live with.
Blue Moon Sauvignon Blanc 2012
We have just released Blue Moon - Our new Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. Blue Moon is New Zealand’s first certified Biodynamic white wine. Just like our Pinot Noir which is also New Zealand’s only Certified biodynamic red wine. Blue Moon is a special single vineyard hand crafted Sauvignon Blanc.
So why the name? A Blue Moon (astronomically known as two full moons in one month) is a rarity just like this wine. As is the rare Blue Moon butterfly - an amazing looking black and blue butterfly with a full moon on each wing. There is a very strong link between the health of the environment and bell weather insects like Butterflies. So we sponsor the Monarch Butterfly NZ Trust which seeks to educate and protect not only the Monarch but all desirable butterflies. Working with Nature enables us to make delicious wine that is not only good for you but also the environment so when we seebutterflies thriving in our vineyard its very rewarding to know this care is paying off.
Richmond Plains has won the Trophy for the best Sauvignon Blanc at the 2012 Sydney International Wine Competition.
Our Sauvignon Blanc 2011 was awarded the Trophy ahead of other top gold medal winning wines from around the world. This is also the first New Zealand organic and biodynamic wine to be awarded this major honour at this show.
We were very excited to be awarded a Gold Medal and to be selected as one of the top 100 entrants to this show (which is limited to 2000 entries from around the world) as well as being awarded a Blue Gold for excellence in food and wine matching. Wining the Trophy is certainly the icing on the cake.
The Sydney Show differs from many as it not only awards the best tasting wines, they are also judged to find out which wines best match food. The Blue Gold is awarded for food matching. The Richmond Plains Sauvignon Blanc was paired with Celebrity Chef Michael Manner's goats curd tartlet with asparagus and herbs.
